Think. Thunk. Thought.

Our girls. What are we doing wrong?

Have you noticed how many YA books begin with
a girl taking the world on, taking on a man's world, and fighting hard to do it?
What is this telling us?
How many young girls are feeling like they are battling against
a society that deems them less?
How are we engaging our young women in these distinctions from a very young age and stopping
those steps of self-belief before they grow too tall?
Girl Against the UniverseGenesis Girl (Blank Slate, #1)
We talk about eating disorders, we talk about the role magazines play on body image in a girl's mind, but we don't actually acknowledge the inner workings at play within the mind and the societal seeds that plant doubt in the first place.
The issue is empowerment, a need for one's own feeling of control over their life, their direction,
who they actually are out in the world.
This is the issue that we need to talk about more.
We need to understand how it is that we are failing our young girls,
our young women, and making them feel powerless over their lives.
This "less than" attitude must stop.
One young woman told me recently that her professor told her to do the "bare minimum,"
just enough to get by on a recent assignment.
She wanted to do more. She wanted to excel, push the limits a little more, explore, but she
was ridiculed for having such an "unnecessary attitude."
Excuse me? No really, excuse me?
The girls I've met who have suffered eating disorders, as one example, have been extremely intelligent and extremely driven for success but somewhere along the line we've said,
"It's not good enough. It's not going to be good enough."
So, we give them these stories instead.
We hand them swords and close their fists and we give them their stories of success,
but I for one want to give them these stories out in the "real" world.
So how do we improve? How do we gift empowerment?

Share your stories,
in open heart-bleeding honesty even if you are seen completely raw.
Share your successes too.
Share the journeys, all the ups and downs, the failures, the everything's.
Let them hear the voices of those that have stepped ahead.
Remind them everything is possible, and then open their hands and fill them with the power of belief.
Begin there, and begin with conversations.
Awareness.
These stories, these books,
hand over swords and closed fists, and intelligence that surpasses their opposition
and makes them believe in what they can do as individuals.
It also brings awareness to our doors.
We need to bring that power, minus the fists and swords,
out into the world, and let the girls carry it there.

Our One Day Every Day YA.

One day,
One Day
there will be that which always should have been.
One day,
there will be that understanding.
One day,
there will be a straight forward direct honesty,
in simplicity, in openness,
in that which there is ease.
Yes, there is steel where there has to be,
otherwise it would be impossible to breathe.
But, one day,
it will not be that way.
One day will be met with others who give that understanding
in their words,
who do not send others to find theirs,
who through kindness and compassion see what should have been seen in the first place,
and when that is done,
with clarity of sight,
with openness of heart,
then
one day
becomes the right day.
To steel it away.
Or steel on.
One day.

In thanks.

In thanks,
do we appreciate generosity of spirit, of hope, of life.
In thanks,
do we appreciate the openness of a loving heart.
In thanks,
do we wish for kindness and dreams to give.
In thanks,
do we remember our mistakes and failures so we might help others through theirs.
In thanks,
do we remember.
Our words. Our stories.
In thanks. In hope. In dreams.
To be.
Thank You and Good Night

And here we go ... on again!

Hard to believe it's that time again --
and a little scary --
but yes,
Melbourne Writers Festival
is officially on.

Words Left Behind.

The words we leave behind.
"There was that day when I wanted to believe the world was beautiful again."
It was like Cath stole those words from my mouth, released them into the room,
and then released this, WORDS IN DEEP BLUE.
30336056
A story of love. A story of words. A story of messages.
The letters -- written with words left unsaid -- heartfelt and honest, slipped inside a book
and left on shelves.
Words in wait,
waiting to be found.
Inspired by the little pieces of us that remain inside the pages of our words,
inside the pages of our lives.
The reminders of what we are.
Truth in the deep blue,
spoken with heart.

Motions to Matter. The Controversial.

We all try.
Whatever that might mean,
it is a completely individual thing.
And then it can change.
We can stop.
What matters doesn't, and it turns to motions, going through in our days.
Nothing sits in quite exactly the right way.
It's in what matters, to find that it doesn't.
This is the point.
All the fire that moved, that which made you you.
It doesn't matter.
Is it dangerous to think this way?
Liberating?
Dilapidating?
Or, just fact,
that what you once were you are no longer in fact.
That should matter,
but it doesn't.
Gone is gone.
Dangerous? Liberating? Dilapidating?
Take your pick.
In the end,
that choice is yours.
These, "the dangerous reads," the controversial's.
To write in such manner, one must have that sense of matter,
to think, to be, to do.
May you always have and keep.

The Rain Away.

Today ...  perfect.
The ultimate rainy, grey and snuggle in day.
I love it.
T'is true, whilst I'm always lusting for days away here and there,
and will leave at a drop of a hat especially to escape winter,
today was just right.
Yours?
The rainy day collection.

C'mon this is what I'm talking about.

Mickle, guts and no regrets.
The Aussie gal got stuck in and "had a crack."
Unfortunately for her that wasn't all that cracked.
Her shoulder dislocated on her last throw, but if you get a chance listen to her recount the experience. She does so with such guts and grace, it's a real buzz.
"I had a good crack, and yeah, if my shoulder hadn't given way, I reckon it would have been a pretty good throw."
She knew she was taking a chance with that shoulder,
but she was going to give it a chance, and she almost made it too.
Last throw,
bound to be a beauty. We watched the effort the strain, the pain, but it was how she walked
away that gave us more reason to be proud.
She's a bright spark who gave what and all she could,
and that will always be admired.

Everything I Never Told You.

Lydia is dead.
No one knows this yet.
Everything I Never Told You
The first words are perfect.
It begins with absolute certainty this is going to be a story of pause,
a reflection on life, what we put on ourselves, what we put too on others --
what we can so easily miss.
We miss a lot, most of us.
It's not that we mean to, it's that we forget to stop and see.
The see in say.
The say in see.
The words we think make us,
the words we hold back and those that bind us.
Our words of fight,
words that give way to necessity.
And then too,
 the words of silence.
Those are yours.
The inside words always told.
Everything I Never Told You.
Our struggles to understand in this heartbreaking story of loss.
A foot in both places.
Two worlds.
One family. One girl.

Dear Sweet Thing.

If you read this place,
you will know words said and words felt.
You will know love beyond reason, and reason beyond love.
You will know today there are words of welcome.
You will know that I send these words
into the universe with the deepest of love and intention.
You will know they will land
in exactly the right place.
You will know,
that words live in my heart,
and my heart lives in me.
Welcome. Welcome.
Dear sweet thing.

Time Travelled Shoes.

Time Travel.
The best kind of travel there could possibly be -- if we only could.
How many of us wouldn't like to go back and fix something,
redo something, understand something more than you ever did.
Even in industry, can you imagine, the ability to go back and forth?
If only.

I must say, I walk this place blind,
and time travel would certainly help let see.
People assume a lot,
and we assume in what we do not see, and from what little we glean.
We also assume people do not understand and do not actually see.
I've met a few people recently, and I know these people are not of the same world as me,
but that doesn't mean you can't say, "G'day."
Doesn't mean you're going to have them over for tea either.
This is a country where we do not have wars.
We do not have that kind of intensity of fight, but still there is fight.
I, myself, will always have fight, tooth and nail, but that's more based on my own personal beliefs,
and that is what will die with me.
Maybe, we have some innate quality in us that needs feeding and we aren't even aware
of it, and it is that which wants fight where there is none.
Maybe, that is exactly what makes the mentality of bullies.
I don't understand it myself.
Fight for what?
This can be in your homes, your backyards,
your communities.
Your worlds.
That which walks our shoes.
We are all individuals, with rights that come with that individuality in choice, life,
in whatever and all we do.
Time travel insight,
as and where we go.
In and with insight, where would you go?
Who would you be?
